Analysing 3 different film opening scenes:
|
The beginning of the opening sequence, is the famous Marvel indent. It is the famous comic book flick at the beginning that can bring nostalgia to the audience-almost everyone knows the famous comic book flick indentThe significance of Marvels intro to an opening sequence is that it brands the film from the beginning and gives attention to MARVEL as a business company.Furthermore, there is an element of humour being used in the opening sequence as it seems to be one long take of a shot for the opening sequence, this gives it an original taste to the opening sequence as a lot of the time, opening sequences are just short takes of characters who are to be are significant in the film. The element of humour is such as the slogan introduction for the characters, such as "A Hot Chick" at 0:46 seconds- which catches the viewers off guard cause its not something they see in movies to be known as.Furthermore, They introduce dead pool as "A CGI CHARACTER" Which furthermore is a use of humour in the opening as they don't introduce the main character as Deadpool but rather try to introduce him in a funny way which could seem to be hysterical to many people. This fits the "theme" of the film as Deadpool is not your stereotypical superhero. As he goes against the conventional/stereotypical good guy stereotypical as Deadpool is shown to be a bad mouth character who shows humour in violence-By showing humour and jokes in the opening sequence.
|
|
Lord Of War-Life of A bullet starts off by having the camera look at a flood of bullets then go straight to a man, this already builds up tension from the beginning as we connote bullets as danger and war.The significance of the man addressing the camera is because it looks like the man is directly addressing the audience. Similar to Deadpool , it s a long take, however this is very smart because in certain points the shot is ended very swiftly without the audience actually knowing. This introduction to the movie is very good as it almost shows you the birth of a bullet and the death of the bullet.Nevertheless, it looks like just one long take and and its almost taken in first person as it portrays the camera as the bullet, and the journey of the bullets being transported through illegal methods.

This opening scene is very thought through, as WARNER BROS are advertised through being graved in to the street road at the beginning, this is very smart as it doesn't ruin the dark,stealthy,high-tensioned night. afterwards the camera stays still on a tripod as the couple of horse-carts are moving, this can resemble us as being stealthy and hiding until the carts are a fair distance from us,which sets the mood for the film.Consequently, short takes are being used in order to gain tension and make the opening scene seem like there is war. This is also backed up by the close ups of the guns being loaded emphasising the danger and the battle that may very occur. The purpose of an opening sequence is to set the theme and mood for the film and this film is very successful at how it sets it. especially the mise en scene, dark lighting connotes, mystery and blind war.The location is also a very part of the opening sequence. it sets the setting and from what we see in opening sequence- we see from what we can guess a high security gated community, and it appears that 2 of the characters are breaking in stealthy.

Idents and Production Companies
Indents with production companies are in every film you see.
They are a way of branding a certain film-Can also be known as an "intro" to a film. I will be looking at the some of the biggest movie idents. and take inspiration from some of the biggest movie production companies' idents for the production of my groups indent.

Walt Disney Pictures is another globally well known company when it comes to films. The indent is the camera going all the way across disneyland and finally getting that famous establishing shot of disneyland at 0:24. the whole indent. is one long shot which continues through a journey of showing the whole of the supernatural, magic Disneyland. The Walt Disney Pictures Intro is famous for the vibe of having "miracles" and supernaturalism. There has been different versions of introductions for Walt Disney Pictures- Such as colour variants(The Jungle Book) which had a darker tone to all colours, especially the blue.Furthermore,An enchanted version which emphasises all the colours. The Walt Disney pictures intro is arguably one of the most complex intros, however this indent took a lot of time to make possible with the technology W.D were given. for example here is the first ever indent for Walt Disney:
Colombia Pictures is widely known for being owned by SONY.Colombia Pictures is one of the big six in the film industry.Clearly, Columbia Pictures features the "Torch Lady". However previously, in 1928 an image of a female Roman Soldier with a stick and shield was used back then instead of the "Torch" It is arguable that a glowing stick with a shield was used back then for the era of war but the glowing can suggest hope to stop any more war happening.. Although it is unclear to what the purpose of "Torch Lady" is, it can be interpreted to show "hope" and "success". Colombia Pictures is often known for its bright light and flash. Which as said, resembles a light in a high place(To which why there is clouds in the background, accompanied by a rainbow).
PIXAR's intro is mainly known for its short and simple introduction. PIXAR Animation Studios was founded by Steve Jobs Ed Catmull Alvy Ray Smith. They have been known for the audience naming them "the best animation studio" and therefore bringing light to PIXAR. PIXAR was formed in 1986 and have always been trying to go for the best animated movie. Disney successfully purchased PIXAR in 2006 for approximately $7.4 billion, thus allowing PIXAR to be a subsidiary of Disney. Some of their most famous films include: CARS by Pixar in 2006, Toy Story by Pixar in 1995 and Finding Nemo by Pixar in 2003. There was a trend in which people would parody versions of PIXAR's introduction. Such as a lego version and a lamp mimicking Darth Vader while holding a lightsaber. All which brings more light and attention to PIXAR as a business company.
Thriller Opening Sequences- Genre Specific
As me and my group have carefully decided the genre of "Thriller". We had to look at 3 genre specific scenes in which they were dedicated to the genre of film.I believe Thriller is a flexible style of genre as within thriller there is a lot of sub-genres within Thriller, e.g Crime Thriller, Action thriller and psychological thriller.
IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS:
Target Audience
As seen on the slideshow, i have picked a fan favourite Thriller film. Se7en which is a famous thriller film intrigued me the most to see what the general audience may think of it. I was extremely suprised by the age range which is provided. I think this is a very good piece of example as Se7en is totally different from what our planned to be thriller film is
I thought about why such age ranges may vary and here was a few points i came up with:
On the other hand, Perhaps YouGov cannot be the most accurate piece of information as this would only have been the results of those who actually decided to sign up to the website and talk about a particular subject-which automatically makes it biased-because if you enjoy a particular movie(in this case Seven) then you're more likely to speak about and thus creating a sense of biased responses and a particular biased lifestyle therefore shadowing other factories which could appear to be in the minority |

We as a group have decided between Final Cut Pro X and Premier Pro - we will use premier pro due to the fact that it is more accessible by all of us. furthermore premier pro had much better flexibiy. Sony Vegas Pro was in consideration but this program was only accessible by me so we needed a program that many would be able access and so Premier Pro looked like the one that would suit us best.
This video(on the right) is me just talking about Props in Thriller films in general and what meaning they generate to the audience.Do not be mistaken for this as a Prop video of the props that I will be using in my actual Film opening sequence. This is just extra work that I have decide to create of me talking about AUDIENCE and Their reaction to Props within Thriller Films.
The video on the right is me letting out my thoughts to what i think about Props in Thriller films and why certain props can create a different Vibe or feeling in the film. |

To the right of this text is a clear image of the entrance of the school. Some of the filming will be within the school site as this will give us an advantage in creating a more thriller-like film-this is going to be because within the school-we will be open to use certain facilities to which will be very efficient and get control of rather. For example the darkroom, as seen below:
|
As Seen above, the darkroom is one of the biggest reasons to which why we will be recording a portion of the film inside the school, the darkroom in my school, is a compact, creepy looking room with very sensitive light in which is usually tinted orange, red or a mixture, this will generate a massive thriller vibe to the audience thus allowing us to stay true to the conventions of Thriller.Furthermore this is possible to make due to the fact that in my group, there are those who also take Photography at A-Level, thus creating the chance for us to use this to our advantage as I believe as a group this can really benefit the Opening sequence.
On the right, i have a train station, and although i just have a picture of a train station, I was thinking about how me and my group can maximise our potential for locations and i believe a train station could be a unique addition to the film-with even travelling to locations via the trains and actually having some unique shots of trains going past-which could allow us to set the pace of the film visually easy for the audience but then cut back between locations in order to make the audience feel confused and uneasy of the real location the film is at , at a specific point/time stamp in the film.
|
One of the possible location we are thinking of going to will definitely be a clingers factory- we believe in order to make the thriller vibe extremely strong-it is up to us to use locations in which will definitely make the audience feel uneasy and discomfort.
|
we believe that locations is one of the vital points for making a thriller film-no matter what the genre is. For example crime thriller would have to have locations In which gives off a sense of crime but a sense of discomfort and possible threat towards the audience.

Shooting Script:
Above, is our shooting script that we have decided to shoot as a group. We talk about what we will most likely include in our film.the shooting script in my opinion was successful and us as a group thought that the idea was creative.

In the PREZI above, i talk about what production company would suit our thriller film best, i look at some of the main and most likely production companies and discuss and come to a conclusion about which Production company would best suit our thriller film for AS media.
In the video above, the editing of this video was pretty simple. All i had to do is cut some pauses between words and cut out fillers such as "ummm", "you know" and "Errr". By deleting these fillers, it makes the video more professional and cuts straight to the point, furthermore there was certain areas where i paused to think about what i was going to say as i had notes in front of me to remind myself of what to speak about, cutting certain areas is one of the most basic concepts of editing-all you have to do is split 2 sections and delete the section in the middle and join them together.furthermore i had a mini small video overlay for when i speak about the music choices for Saving Private Ryans, as i was talking about a particular scene-it was much more friendly to the audience to have a video for those who weren't familiar with the scene..
Moreover, i added non diegetic music in the background and decreased the db (decibel) to around -18. by doing this, it adds a slight more lively tone to the music and therefore you're more likely to continue watching the video, the reason to why i decreased the db is to make it clear for the audience to hear what im saying with no problem. The mise en scene of the video was quite clever,I had made sure to take advantage of the weather, as the lighting was perfect and the atmosphere was quite- i had decided to record in my garden, as it also brings more life to the video as opposed to me recording in my room with artificial lighting.
If i had to redo this video, i would be more aware of the framing of the video, it was not a big deal but if the placement of the camera was slightly further back for the first 4 minutes-ish , it would look more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The editing software i used was Sony Vegas Pro 14 as i had access to it from my home.

SOUNDTRACK CHOICES
Creating the Ident was a challenging task at first. There was 2 contenders to which would help us create the Ident.Blender 3D and Adobe After Effects. we eventually came to an agreement and knew the best software to use was going to be Adobe After Effects.Although this appeared to be the most friendly software to use for beginners, it was however a program in which none of my group including me had great knowledge about. it was either none to very little experience with After Effects. In which concluded in us to watch finished products of idents on Youtube-which massively helped us find and acknowledge the type of quality we are expected to produce within a ident. After we watched several idents and tutorial videos of this. We have then discussed potential names for our production company. In the end we have decideed to use "Innovative Productions".
Finished Product: The Ident Innovative Productions

To the right, is our Production Company Logo, which is based off "Innovative Productionss-we wanted to link the ident and the logo together so they can correlate with one another. The logo was produced and designed in Photoshop CS6. A Logo is important due to the fact, that is what people recognise a company by. especially a memorable logo. it helps distribute and market the film and makes the company look more professional |
We Have decided to use Facebook, in order to make a page for our production company so we can connect with fans easily and even be able to advertise on where we can distribute the film.
The reasons for us choosing Facebook is:

DAY 1 FOOTAGE and BEHIND THE SCENES:
DAY 2 FOOTAGE and BEHIND THE SCENES:
What the photos above are for: In Day 2, we were 100% filming in this area of the school, the reason for this is that this room was big enough for room but small enough to show darkness when the lights where turned off, furthermore, the lights in this area was unique, when the blinds where pulled down, a glimpse of light would still appear on the floor, which was sufficient lighting in my opinion, along with some lamps and flashlights in order to flash at the subject at hand.
PEOPLES REACTION TO OUR FILM OPENING SEQUENCE!
FEEDBACK
This is a reaction video to our first edit of our film opening sequence, we believe that this was not only fun to cure our curiousty of what people think of our film but also allows us to gain feedback from those who are within our target audience so this gives us very accurate information
One of the bigggest feedbacks we had was the framing in this shot This shot was labled as a gimmick in our film opening sequence and said
we recieved citical feedbacks about how it was slightly off at times. to have not much meaning and an ameature way to end of the film,we
And so the framing needs configuration listened and will change this as it was said this was more of a horror move
